I will update this whenever I have some time with the best new music I’ve heard, a new movie I’ve seen, a Short film, and an upcoming movie I think will be good.

MUSIC

Dreamer

Haste the Day has been growing on me since the first time I heard “Breaking my Own Heart” back in like Sophmore year of high school.   Literally, every time, for a week, we’d put on that song and just absolutely go crazy.  The releases since Burning Bridges have only been getting better and better, to be put frankly.  They are getting older and becoming more mature and their music is a perfect reflection of this.  Dreamer takes their music to a new level.  The catchy choruses are still very much present but a more tight and heavy feel is added to this album.  A second and third listen to the album will reveal the overdubbed guitars, sound effects, and other small things that all come together to create a perfect sound.  Definitely check this out if you haven’t already.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The short plot summary of the movie was enough to draw me in.  “Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences.”  It was simply incredible.  It was an epic 3 hour movie that didn’t feel it’s length.  Time went by fast, a whole mans life, from start to finish is perfectly told.  Small details engross the film and all come together neatly at the end.  Brad Pitt is honestly flawless in his performance of a man who ages backwards.  You’ll laugh, you’ll be sad, you’ll be energetic, and you’ll be sad again.  Go see it.

Lost in the Sound of Seperation

Underoath has been a favorite band of mine for a very long time and with each CD they grow more and more on me.  Lost in the Sound of Seperation is no exception.  At a first listen you will be overwhelmed with all of the different sounds entering your ear but with two full listens of the album, you should fully appreciate the songs as art as well as being nice and heavy.  They stick to the catchy choruses in most songs and in others give a nice mellow feel to it which balances very nicely.  Definitely check out this CD when it comes out on Sepetember 2nd.

Old Boy

I saw this movie a while ago but I was looking through my few movies that I actually save on my computer and saw this one there.  Basically in a nutshell this movie is about a man who is captured by an unknown person for 15 years and then released randomly.  He is then told that he has 5 days to find out who is captor is.  The mood of the movie is very upbeat and leaves you hanging at every scene.  The suspense holds the audience high throughout the whole movie and peaks at the final scene.  Definitely check it out, some amazing editing and cinematography as well.

Sky Eats Airplane

Sky eats Airplane was referred to me randomly on some forum and I downloaded their first CD, Everything Perfect on the Wrong Day, and was just blown away.  This underground band is starting to get attention with its unique combination of trance and techno sound effects with hardcore music.  Together, these create a sound never heard before that will get your heart beat racing.  I read in an interview with the band that with their first CD, they created the sound effects track first and then added instruments but was opposite for this album.  Their isn’t as many effects as their first, but I think it’s just right.  Definitely get this CD, it will not disappoint.

High Tension

Haute Tension (High Tension)

Two female college students, Marie and Alexa, set off to Alex’s parents’ secluded homestead in the country to relax and study. Come nightfall, Hell pulls up at the front door when a mysterious killer breaks in and kills Alexa’s father, mother, brother, and pet dog. Alex is now bound and gagged, taken off by the killer, with Marie not far behind eluding the intruder. Can she save her friend’s life in time, or is everything all that it seems…?  Tension is certainly high in this French horror movie.  I usually laugh at horror movies but this one was actually very good, so that should be enough of a lure to go see it for yourself!

Scary Kids Scaring Kids

Scary Kids Scaring Kids is a band that I haven’t really fancied in the past so much. Their previous CD, The City Sleeps in Flames didn’t really stick to my ears and only left me with a few memorable songs. This one, however, really connects on the first listen. 16 tracks long, and seemingly endless repeats make this album one you should definitely check out. While they stick mostly to the “half-heavy” and in your face sort of songs, they still kick it back and slow it down in 3 or 4 of them. This is definitely a CD to check out as soon as possible!

Slipstream

Aging screenwriter Felix Bonhoeffer has lived his life in two states of existence: in reality and his own interior world. While working on a murder mystery script, and unaware that his brain is on the verge of implosion, Felix is baffled when his characters start to appear in his life, and vice versa. This movie is so fucked up and weird you will be absolutely baffled until the end of it- that is if you make it to the end. It was painful to sit through at first and you begin to think that every flashy thing shown is just random: but it isn’t. I am going to plan for a second watching of this and I hope to piece a lot more together. “A dream within a dream”

Pretty Odd
Pretty Odd

Panic at the Disco’s debut CD : A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out , was an unbelievable album in my opinion. The unique sound and look of them and their music videos caught my attention along with millions of other people. This band was a seemingly overnight success with the help of Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. I thought it’d be impossible to follow up from their previous album with anything decent, but sure enough they have. The new album, entitled Pretty Odd shows a more mature sound that is even corkier than the first. The album, released on March 25th of this year, had some people second guessing it instantly after the first listen. It seemed as if “Fever” really caught the ears on the first listen and this one takes a couple listens. I fell into this same both on my first run through of the album. I’m pretty sure a “Wow, that was fucking weird” came out a few times. After the second time running through the album, I was tappin’ along. And by the third time through I could sing-a-long word for word. This is really an album you need to listen to. It just makes you happy and joyful when listening to it. Don’t listen to what others say about this album being a Beatles replica cause that statement is, just plain and simple, garbage. Give your ears a listen of some Pretty Odd, I’m sure they’ll greatly thank you later.

The Air I Breathe

A drama based on an ancient Chinese proverb that breaks life down into four emotional cornerstones: happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love. A businessman bets his life on a horse race; a gangster sees the future; a pop star falls prey to a crime boss; a doctor must save the love of his life. Forest Whittaker, Kevin Bacon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Brendan Fraser do phenomenal jobs in letting us into the lives and personalities of their characters in such a short amount of time. These four stories come together and give a very powerful ending to such a great movie. Definitely check it out.

Me: 8 / 10 | IMDB: 7.6 / 10
